There is an age-old argument about whether talent or hard work are more important. Many people know someone with a natural gift. These people are swimming past you effortlessly while you’re just trying to keep up with the current. Even though it might seem that people with natural talents are always at the top, hard work is what produces better results. It is best to put your effort into being successful.

Hard work brings a satisfaction that is not available with natural talent. It was unfair that the student, who didn’t study but always got high grades, seemed to be envied by many. Working hard is worthwhile because of the feeling of accomplishment. After spending part of the weekend studying for the test, when you finally get your results you’re elated. You know you earned this grade because you worked hard. What about the student who received the same grade without any effort? Be sure to check that their grade was not due to their natural talents before you criticize them. You may be able to tell that the student didn’t need to study, but it could just look that way. All the media loved to discuss tiger’s natural talent for golf and how he seemed to be born with it. When asked this question, Tiger Wood said that although it may look like he has a natural talent for golf, it was actually years of hard work. Tiger Woods began practicing as a young child. His first golf club was handed to him at age one. Keep in mind (Syed, Matthew) that not everything is as it seems. Hard work is valuable, but what makes it so? It teaches a lot of lessons. It teaches us to put in our best effort in all we do. We also learn to take pride and apply ourselves to every task. Most employers seek out people who are proud of their work. It is better to put in consistent effort than relying only on talent. K. Anders had violin students estimate the number of hours they practiced. The results showed that top students spent around 10,000 hours practicing, while good students spent around 8,000 and lower ranked students just 5,000. These results show the direct benefits of hard work.

Hard work is rewarded. How does someone with a talent for something fare? They may be on the same level as you when they start out, due to their natural talent. The gap will grow as you practice more and they rely on their talent. Malcom gladwell did a comparison between those with high IQs who are hard workers and those with higher IQs. Gladwell discovered that the relationship between success an IQ only worked up to a limit. (Steel,Piers,PhD)

Natural talent is not enough to be successful in life. Hard work and dedication are more important. If we do not work to improve our natural talents, we will stagnate and never progress. We all need to work hard if we want our lives to be better.
